On Monday morning Captain Gary was on a steep learning curve figuring out how to use the heating in his hi tech new hoose. Meanwhile his minions were arriving at the coal face under dark clouds at Haddington GC. There were worried looks when the Kilspindie faithful noticed some of the hosts were wearing ankle boots and others had breeks tucked into socks, did they know something we didn’t?
Host skipper David Parker gave us a warm welcome over bacon butties and coffee. The first tee was a wobbly affair with a rather bumpy mat but most of us got decent shots away. Fairway mats were optional and most of us used them at points which helped with the culture shock of heavy parkland ground as opposed to accustomed links. The green staff deserved great praise for presenting the course so well after such a wet winter. Dougie and Kenny in the lead group were hanging in there. Unfortunately at the turn, when all square, opponent Gordon had to withdraw. They agreed with Bobby to call it a draw rather than ask him to take them on alone, so they enjoyed a pleasant, social back 9. Gordon’s injury was caused by his wallet bizarrely! He slipped and fell banging his body via his wallet in his inside pocket which did for his ribs. This prompted some speculation as to how much money was in the wallet. We advised leaving more of it in a bank in future!
Norrie and Tony were motoring along playing HGC skipper Dave who disconcerted them with a majestic 5 iron 165 yards at the 6th which plopped in to the cup for a cool birdie. Less impressive was Dave’s arithmetic. After a 35 year career as a maths teacher he and the combined brainpower of the others couldn’t work out two strokes Tony’s nett score at one hole. The Mensa applications are on hold although they managed to work out that KGC had won by 3&2, good shooting .
Mike D and Tommy were having a mixed bag working hard against superior opposition, they found themselves 3 down with 4 to go. According to Mike due to a magic combination of lucky bounces, flukey putts and the odd stroke they managed to scrape a half. Admirable modesty Mike & Tommy.
Former Skipper Tom and Secretary Dan looked slightly shell shocked when they arrived back for their welcome chicken pie. Danny continues to evolve his swing and Tom was suffering PTSD after the old firm game on Sunday so sadly they succumbed to defeat!
Graeme and John with a combined height of something close to the height of the Scott Monument glided round the course dodging seagulls and walking off with a win of 3&2. We don’t need Dave Parker to tell us that with one match still on the course Kilspindie led overall 3 to 2.
Breath was bated and there was great anticipation amid the chicken pie debris. Up against fierce opposition Stewart and Alex bore the weight of being the final pair. After a tough match they were beaten but secretly I think they were being diplomatic as their result led to an overall honourable draw 3-3. It was a good result as the atmosphere on the day was excellent. The weather was kind to us in the end as we came home dry and just a little muddy.
Dave’s closing remarks led off with the story of the 3C’s. There were sharp intakes of breath and some groans from the Kilspindie boys as they realised Dave was stealing Gary’s thunder. How would that go down in the now toasty Zoltie Towers remains to be seen!
